Silk Painting Designs using "Hidden" Gutta Lines
Coneflowers

Start by painting the petals a pale tint of your chosen colour. Shade the tops of the petals below the cones.
One at a time, draw lines with clear water-soluble gutta and shade the veins on the petal indicated by (1). The broken lines on the design are veins. Outline and shade the outside of the petal.
Deal with all the petals in the same way working from the lightest to the darkest. On the design the lines of the lightest petals are shown coloured red.
Paint and shade the cones a light under-paint colour for the cone spikes. Draw in the cone spikes with gutta.
Paint, shade and outline each cone in receding order.
Use a dark mottled effect explained on page 6 to paint the background. The image has a batik wax crackle.

Start by outlining all the red lines on the design with clear water-soluble gutta.
Paint deep pink inside the lips. The number (1) indicates a lip.
Shade the inner flowers a pale creamy yellow. Outline the inner flowers. These are pink lines on the design. Paint the centres a deeper yellow. Outline the stamen. Shade the centre of each flower around the stamen.
Paint the petals pale pink. Shade the base of the petals. Outline and shade both sides of the petal centre lines. Outline the petals. Shade the petal tips.
Paint the stems a yellow-green. Outline the highlighted edges. Shade and outline the rest of each stem.
Use a dark mottled effect explained on page 6 to paint the background. The image has a batik wax crackle.

Start by painting the silk with a pale blue wash. Outline with clear water-soluble gutta the stems, leaves and flowers shown by red lines on the design.
Paint and shade the petals and buds. Complete the flowers’ outlines. Paint, shade and outline the leaves.>
Paint the stems and flower centres a very dark green.
After the painted silk has been fixed and washed, pin the silk back onto your painting frame. Dilute pearlized white permanent gutta with a little green silk paint and use a brush to paint the stamen radiating from the centre of each flower (see page 6).
Use a light mottled effect explained on page 6 over the background. The image has a light batik wax crackle.

Using yellow, painting wet into damp, start by shading the lower part of area indicated by (1). Draw in all the red lines on the design with clear water-soluble gutta. Paint the face yellow and outline face and eye. Paint the eye light brown and outline the iris. Paint the iris black. Take care not to wet the eye’s white highlight.
Paint, shade and outline this part of the upper beak blending the paint with water along the top edge.
Paint, shade and outline the orchids in turn working backwards through the layers. Paint the inner sides of the petals yellow and orange, and the outer sides pink.
Paint, shade and outline the stems.
Then paint, shade and outline the remaining beak parts.
Paint the background using mottled shades of green blending to black around the toucan’s head and body.
