Silk Painting Designs using "Hidden" Gutta Lines

Snowdrops

1. “Snowdrops”

2. Working Drawing

Start by shading the left side and base of the foremost petal indicated (1), a very pale tint of grey-green. Outline the petal with clear gutta.

Apply shading against the side of this petal. Deal with the outer petals in the same way one at a time. Outline and paint the yellow-green flash on the inner petal.

Deal with all the flowers and then the sequence unfolds through the darkening shades of green and brown.

Paint the snowdrop leaves and stems very pale blue-green. Shade and outline the stems. Outline and shade the centre veins and then outline and shade the leaves.

Deal with the ivy leaves and flower tops. Paint the background, sprinkle on salt and leave to dry naturally.

Rhododendron

3. “Rhododendron”

4. Working Drawing

Start by cutting a stencil and use it in three positions to speckle the upper petals. See page 6 for details.

One at a time draw the floret’s stigma and stamen, shown red on the design, with clear water-soluble gutta.

Paint the turned petal edge indicated by (1) a very pale tint of your chosen colour. Outline the petal edge.

Apply shading against the outlined edge and at the base of the petal. Outline the lower half of the petal. Shade the centre vein. Outline the rest of the petal.

The sequence unfolds anticlockwise from the first petal. Deal with each turned edge, petal and vein in turn.

Paint the background with dark colours or reposition the drawing in several places and paint more florets.

Viburnum

5. “Viburnum”

6. Working Drawing

Start with the floret indicated by (1) the arrow. Outline the two turned petal edges and the lower petal, shown by red lines on the design. Shade around these outlines and in the centre of the floret with a pale pink-grey.

Outline the remaining petals and the centre of the floret. Paint the stamen area yellow. Outline the stamen. Paint darker shading around the stamen.

Deal with all the florets and the buds in turn, working backwards through the layers. Add varying tints of pink to the outside of the buds and some of the petals.

Paint, shade and outline the stems. Paint and shade the leaves before outlining and shading their veins. In this way both the leaf and its veins are evenly shaded.

Outline the leaves and paint the background very dark.
